Kinship - Family Patterns
Kinship Terms
Family is one of the most important components of any culture however not all family patterns are the same.
Nuclear family - consist of father, mother, brothers and sisters only.
Extended family - consists of nuclear family plus other family members often grandparents. cousins, aunts etc.
Patrilineal - family maintains father's surname and father is head of family.
Matrilineal - family maintains mothers surname and mother is head of family.
Monogomous - only married to one person at a time.
Polygomous - - married to more than one person at at time. Ex several wives.
